Biggar Museum and Gallery

The Biggar Museum and Gallery opened on September 30, 1972, due to the hard work and dedication of a group of members from the local community. First located in the basement of the Lionel A. Jones Library, the museum eventually outgrew its space and in 1993, Royden Donahue donated a building that would have allowed the museum to expand. Unfortunately, the building was destroyed in 1994 by fire, but the museum board decided to carry on with the move by building a new structure on the donated site. After approximately three years of major fund-raising and planning the Biggar Museum and Gallery celebrated its grand opening on October 4, 1997, at its new location at 105-3rd Ave. West.

This Biggar Museum and Gallery is more than just a museum. It not only houses a variety of historical artifacts that illustrate the town and districts history, but it also contains a gift shop and an art gallery that features a new show approximately every four to eight weeks.

Eamon, Deltra

Deltra Eamon Aleida, once a student of Mrs. McKenzie, was a graduate of the Royal Conservatory and the University of Toronto. Her first big break came with a principle role with the Tennessee Ernie Ford weekly TV show which she held for five years. She has appeared in Canada, Japan, USA, Mexico,Brazil, Venezuela, England, Greece, Italy and Australia, captivating audiences and critics alike with her charming presence and lustrous voice. She has toured with Danny Kaye, Roger Wagner Chorale and Victor Borge and has stared in many light opera productions including Carousel, Brigadoon, Oklahoma, My Fair Lady and Showboat. Her husband Laurindo Almeida was a world renowned guitarist whom she married in 1971. Almeida passed away in 1995 at the age of 78 leaving behind two children and his wife. In 2004, Eamon was a resident of Sherman Oakes, California, USA.

Deltra is the daughter of the late Harry G. and Constance (Horsman) Eamon of Biggar.

Ellis, Thomas P.

Tom Ellis was born at Cullross in 1873 to George and Ellen (Playford) Ellis. His father died when he was nine years old. His mother married John Hassard a farmer from Dauphin, Manitoba. They had seven children. Tom married Ida Fulton in 1906.

In 1908 and 1909, the family, including Bob and sister, Sarah Hassard (she became the first school teacher in Biggar) and Stan and Bob Fulton (who worked on the railway) came to the little village of Biggar.

The Ellis’ were very community minded, helped to build the first curling rink. As President of the first school board, Tom was instrumental in the building of a big three story brick building. They had two children when they came to Biggar, George and Edith and then Ruth, Hugh, Sheila, Glen and Roger. George and Tom Ellis were instrumental in owning the first gas tractor in Biggar.

Tom started in the McCormick farm machinery agency in his office on Main Street, (next to Wright’s garage). Later it was joined by the Deering industry. In 1919, Tom sold the business to Walker Mitchell and moved to Tisdale to operate the Carrot River Valley Oil Company. Again, they were very involved in the community. During the winter months Tom went to work in the bush in northern Ontario and Mrs. Ellis took in boarders.

In 1928, the family moved back to Biggar to run the Bob Hassard farm. The depression was setting in but they soon started to use power machinery and had the first combine in the community. They operated a large mixed farm with horses, cattle, pigs, chickens and turkeys. Prices were so low they had to knock the baby pigs on the head to kill them as the price of a market pig was not enough to pay for the trucking. In 1936, Tom and Ida moved back into Biggar to operate the dray and taxi service for the C.P.R. to Biggar route.

After their retirement, they were still active in the community, especially curling, bridge and the Men’s band. They left their mark on the community.

Tom died in 1960 and Ida in 1975. They are buried in Biggar Cemetery.

Shaw, Dr. Sidney

Dr. Sidney E. Shaw of Biggar is a man of varied activities and has perhaps done more, or at least as much, for his fellowmen as any prominent man in the Dominion. A native of Nova Scotia, he was born at Berwick on the 24th of September, 1872, a son of Henry and Margaret (Brown) Shaw. His father was born in Nova Scotia and was known as the "Cranberry King", growing apples and cranberries, and making a specialty of the latter. His death occurred in his native province in March, 1916, at the age of eighty-two years. Mrs. Shaw died in May, 1895. On the maternal side Dr. Shaw is descended from Pocahontas.

The public schools of Berwick, Nova Scotia, afforded Sidney E. Shaw his preliminary education and he then entered one of the first schools for men nurses, the McLean Hospital Training School at Waverly, Massachusetts, near Boston. After graduation from that institution he did private nursing for a while and then entered Dalhousie University at Halifax, graduating with the M. D. degree in 1899. For the following two years he was a temporary medical officer in the navy and then for one year was house surgeon at the Royal Victoria Hospital at Halifax. At the termination of that time he returned to his native town, Berwick, and practised there for nine years. In 1910 he came west and located in Biggar and he was affectionately known as "the father of the town". Biggar was organized as a town in 1909 and since taking up residence here the Doctor was an influential factor in its remarkable growth and development. Aside from his practice, which is of an extensive and important nature, he operated a drug store here for a number of years. When he first came to Biggar the Doctor acquired a homestead of a half section of fine land and he brought the place to a highly developed state and thereon became engaged in scientific farming, which is one of his hobbies. In 1914 he was awarded the local government prize of five hundred dollars for the best ten acres of alfalfa and 1923 was the fourth year that he sold grain grasses and clover for the Dominion government exhibit in England. For five years the government demonstration was carried on at his farm. One of the main ambitions of the Doctor was to find some practical use for this light soil. In year, 1923, he had five hundred and sixty acres of land in winter rye. Dr. Shaw was of an inventive turn of mind and among his inventions were a refrigerator and shower bath. The refrigerator required no ice and proved of immense value to the housekeeper.

On the 22nd of October, 1902, Dr. Shaw was married to Miss Clara Crispo, a daughter of Francis and Susan (Bourne) Crispo, natives of England. Her father was chief clerk in the Customs Department at Montreal for a good many years, finally retiring from active life. His death occurred in May, 1898, and Mrs. Crispo passed away in February, 1908. Dr. and Mrs. Shaw became parents of one child, Francis Crispo, who was born on the 23rd of October, 1903, and died on the 11th of February, 1918, when fourteen years of age.

In his political views the Doctor was always independent, giving his support to the man best fitted for the office without regard to party principles. He always maintained an active interest in civic affairs and he was a member of the city council for a number of years. He held the office of mayor five years and during that time inaugurated and brought to completion many movements for the development and improvement of the community. Biggar is one of the most prosperous towns of its size throughout the Dominion and it owes a debt of gratitude to the Doctor for the part he played in helping in its success and continued prosperity. Fraternally he was identified with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Independent Order of Foresters and his religious faith was that of the Baptist church. Along strictly professional lines he was identified with the Saskatchewan Medical Society. Dr. Shaw was commissioned a captain in the Medical Corps upon the outbreak of the Great war but did not get to do active service overseas. He published in the 1920's a pamphlet on a new system of grain growing, which was most suited to western conditions, and when widely adopted, would mark a turning point in that branch of farming. The Doctor is a man of unusual activity and genius. In his case the old saying "Jack of all trades and master of none" is not true, for he was successful in every undertaking.

Dr. Shaw passed away on June 2nd, 1931 and is buried in the family plot in Biggar Cemetery. [1]

Hassard, Sarah

Sarah Hassard was the first teacher in Biggar, first teaching above McPhee's store in January of 1910 until the Biggar Public School was constructed. The first principal was Mr. Horsman.

Biggar Public School

Currently Grades Kindergarden to Grade 12 are housed in Biggar Central School 2000 which was approved in 1997 for construction and opened April 14, 2000. Before this Grades one through four attended Nova Wood School

Historically, Biggar school district #2497 situated at township 36, range 15, west of the 3rd meridian served students in the area. Mr. Horsman served as principal of the new school, and Sarah Hassard, the first teacher.

St. Paul's Anglican Church

The first Church of England church service was held in Biggar on April 25, 1909 in the Fisher Brothers Pool Room on Main Street. The first service attracted fifty people. A pool table was used as the collection plate. Catechist was Hedley G. Stacey, a layman from England. After two services in the pool room, the congregation moved to the J.G. Ormrod building on First Ave. next to the alley behind the Eden Hotel (where the Fields store is located). The church building was completed and opened on July 1909 at the corner of Fourth Ave. and King Street. An organ was obtained from the settler’s effects of Mr. and Mrs. Woods. Mr. W.G. Glover was organist and Rev. Stacey use to accompany on his cornet. Later, Mr. Glover also conducted the first male choir in 1931-1932.

The first Holy Communion service was celebrated by Bishop Newnham on May 15, 1910. The bishop preformed the first baptism on May 20, 1910 when Nellie Shepherd was baptised. The first marriage to take place was that of William Scrimshaw Moody and Clara Marshall on December 1, 1910.
The records reveal the first mention of Sunday School in 1911, early on there was also a choir, a Women’s Auxiliary and a Junior W.A. were in operation as early as 1912 and 1914. In 1913, an 11 a.m. service was added to the well established 7:30 evening service but was not well attended. Sometime during the first decade a church hall and a rectory were built. Rev. H.E. Brigettt formed the first Biggar Scout Troop with Mr. Douglas Stuart as secretary. Mrs. Brigett formed the Girl Guides.

In 1929 the church was enlarged to its present size. A new church kitchen was built in 1941. In 1960 the old church hall was tore down and the church basement was dug out to house a new hall. A new rectory was built on 4th Ave. East next to the church. The inside of the church was redecorated in the 1960's.

In recent years the old rectory was torn down and the area landscaped. The exterior was recently renewed with new siding and doors.

Biggar Hotel

Built in 1909 at 115 First Avenue West with Eugene Baron as proprietor. Mr Baron built and furnished the Biggar Hotel. The hotel was very well appointed in every particular and was a most comfortable inn. This was a three story building with a wrap around deck. At this time Mr Baron proposed to build an addition to his already roomy building for the accommodation of the rapidly increasing business.

In January 1910, the first school house classes were held above McPhee's store which has now been absorbed into the Biggar Hotel. Miss Sarah Hassard was the inaugural teacher.

This hotel has had many different proprietors throughout the years. Following the ads in the Independent list Mr & Mrs J. Markling in 1929, in 1941 Mr. R.P. Hassard as proprietor. In 1964 George Hilsenteger.1968, Ida and Ewald Hicke of Killaly. 1980 saw the Victor Derbowka family own and operate the business.
1985 the business was co-owned by Irvin and Jane Bayda and Wally and Gloria Piowerbeski.

Geo. C. Porteous

House Painter Decorator

Mr. George C. Porteous was Biggar’s first house painter and decorator. He arrived here on March 31, 1909. With all the building activity no doubt he was kept very busy. Mr. Porteous had apprenticed with James Kitchen, one of Edinburgh’s foremost decorators of the time.

The Porteous brothers initiated the Biggar Lending library where they had 315 volumes available for a 50 cents joining fee.

Mr. Porteous painted a screen c.1916 for the Majestic Theatre and also several paintings with scenes of Scotland for the Clachan which were displayed at their public events. I ‘ve been told the Clachan paintings are in the collection of the Biggar Museum and Gallery. Mr. Porteous passed away in late November 1937, at the age of 61 years.

Tweedyside, Alexander Todd

Alexander Todd Tweedyside was the first overseer of the newly formed Local Improvement District, the pre-cursor of the rural municipality. He was also one of the first homesteaders to the area.

Immigration Hall

One of the first buildings built in Biggar was the New Government Immigration Hall. The Canadian government had the hall in Biggar built in 1909 at First Avenue and Queen Street. The structure was a one and a half story building, 72 feet x 32 feet. Howard McLaren was the immigration agent. The building was later, moved and turned sideways and made into a garage on First Ave.

The building was in use until the late 1990's when the property was purchased by CN, tore down and replaced with the modern CN bunkhouse.

History of the Immigration Hall in Biggar, Sask.

March 13th, 1909... Memo written by the Deputy Minister of the Interior...to build an Immigration Hall in Biggar.

April 24th 1909... Letter to the Dept of Immigration ...re...deplorable conditions facing immigrants travelling west through Biggar. Regarding lack of accommodations and food over the weekends. One weekend 30-40 people were kept for 12 hours in the rail cars. It stated that most of the through traffic was comprised of women and children and it was particularly hard in a place like Biggar, "so void of accommodation", and occasionally to be held over from Saturday night to Monday morning.

Sept. 23,1909...Letter from Commissioner of Immigration . This letter states that the Hall was ready on the 11th of Sept. at a price of $2654.00, built by contractor J.B.Isbister of Saskatoon.

Nov 5th, 1909... April 17th , 1916.... Decision to close Immigration Hall in Biggar.

June 27th 1917.... Request from Mrs. Sellers, a nurse in Biggar, for permission to lease or rent the Immigration Hall Building for a hospital.

July 10th 1917.... letter stating the poor condition of the roof of the building and the cost to have it repaired ($295.00) to be done by A.W.Sully of Biggar.

Sept 6th 1917.... Tenders for the purchase of the building would be accepted until Oct 1st, 1917. Purchaser to remove the building.

Nov 15th 1917... Tender accepted from Dr Shaw, Mayor of Biggar.(Public Works Dept). Condition that he remove the building or make other arrangements with CPR for use on the site.

Andrew Charles was one of the first squatters on the land near Biggar when the Dominion Land Survey crew came through. His squatter's rights were recognised and he went on to prove up the NW quarter of Section 14, Township 37 Range 15 West of the Third Meridian as well as the SW quarter of the same section.

Ontario House

Ontario House was a three storey, 25' x 58' building on First Avenue East next to the alley running behind the businesses on Main Street erected by Mr. John G. Ormrod. Mr. Ormrod and his wife were the first people to locate on the town site of Biggar. When they arrived the site was a collection of surveyors stakes and unbroken prairie, a wilderness. Several businesses operated on the main floor, a public hall on the second which was used for church services and meetings and on the third floor was sleeping rooms.
