John Jack Sharman a pharmacy chemist came to Biggar in 1955 when he purchased and took over Spooner’s Drug store. With the change of ownership on September 5, 1955 the drug store was renamed Sharman’s Drug. The interior of the store remained a lot like it was in its earlier days when it had a soda fountain with high stools. Jack operated the pharmacy until 1973 when he and his family moved to Victoria, BC.

Jack was born on September 17, 1920 on a homestead in the Birsay district of Saskatchewan. In World War II he served as a CANLOAN officer where he was wounded. After recovering he was discharged and returned to Saskatchewan and entered university. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a degree in pharmacy. While at university he served as class president of the College of Pharmacy. He married Evelyn Stockman of Prince Albert in 1947 and bought a drug store business at Dinsmore. In 1955 he moved with his family to Biggar. Jack and Evelyn raised a family of three sons and one daughter. Jack was active in community life in Biggar and also served for a time as president of the Saskatchewan Pharmaceutical Association. Upon relocating to Victoria, he worked an additional twenty years for McGill and Orme. He passed away on February 25, 2008 in Victoria.

Halloween treats were extra special at the Sharman's in the fifty's. You planned your route to definately go to their house because they gave big chocolate bars out for treats. What a thrill to get a nice Chrispy Crunch,Sweet Marie etc. for free. Those bars were 10. cents you know that was most of our allowance back then. Kids would line up as Mrs. Sharman brought out the tray of bars. We all got to choose one. I lived on fifthth ave. West at the time so all my friends and I would hurry down fifth towards main street so we would be the first kids to get there. At that time Jack & Evelyn lived on the corner of Fifth Ave West and Main Street. Those were the days.
