Nova Wood School located on the corner of 6th Ave. East and King Street was named to honor Mr. Nova Wood who dedicated many years of service to education in Biggar and the surrounding area. In the early 1920's, Mr. Wood was elected as a trustee for the Neola school district. He served as secretary of the local trustee’s association for several years. With the formation of the Biggar School Unit No. 50 in 1944, he was elected as trustee for sub unit No. 1 and served on the board until 1970, with thirty-four of those years as chairman of the board. He also served for a time as vice president of the West Central Zone Trustee’s Association and as an executive member of the West Central Unit Zone Committee.
Nova Wood School was a nine-room primary school used to accommodate pupils in three classes each of grades 1, 2 and 3 and one of the grade 4 classes. It was constructed at a cost of $131,718. The equipment installed in the new building added $4,430.11 to the costs. The school featured special blackboards. Paint used on the concrete block walls was said to last the lifetime of the building. The floor slabs were designed to allow for correction due to settling.
With the opening of
Biggar Central School 2000 students from Nova Wood School were moved into the new facility. Nova Wood School became the headquarters for the
Biggar School Division until the amalgamation of the Biggar School Division into Sun West School Division. The Sun West School Division sold the building in 2008 to Biggar Community Connections.
