Bernadette Valerie (Kelly) McDonald was born in 1951 in the town of Biggar, Saskatchewan. It was in 1967 that McDonald traveled to Tacoma, Washington to study at the Pacific Lutheran University. By 1972, Bernadette had earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English as well as a Bachelor of Music Degree. While working with Parks Canada, she met and married Alan McDonald. McDonald has written three books, edited books, directed festivals, and climbed mountains. After their marriage they moved to Banff, and for two decades beginning in 1988, she was the Banff Mountain Film Festival Director and expanded the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour to international audiences. She was one of the inaugural founders of the Banff Mountain Book Festival.

Her book, Brotherhood of the Rope: The Biography of Charles Houston was the finalist for the 2007 Boardman Tasker prize. She was recipient of the King Albert Award, the Queen's Golden Jubilee 2001Medal and the Alberta 2009 Order of Excellence. for promoting mountaineering culture and mountain conservation. McDonald was presented with the Himalayan Club 2008 award, the Kekoo Naoroji 2009 award for Mountain Literature as well as the Summit of Excellence Award. During the 2001 International Year of Mountain she was able to increase the awareness of Banff, the Canadian Rockies and of mountain culture by speaking at the United Nations.
The Government of Alberta Lieutenant General's office quotes her as saying its "doing the best you can at something that you are passionate about…it's pulling together like-minded people with common passions and values and making something happen."
