Grandmother Playford McArthur
Mary Ann Doubleday (c1840-1925) was born to Edward Doubleday who was wed to Mary Ann Wing, both of Norfolk, England. According to Barbara Lee Page, Doubleday was born in Attleborough, Norfolk, probably in 1826, the year of christening. Thomas Playford (1819-1872) was married to Mary Ann Doubledee. Thomas Playford was the sheriff of Huron County for a few years heading a family tradition of civic service. Her husband died in Ont. in 1872 before the family moved to Manitoba. Following the passing of Thomas in 1872, Mary Playford re-married Robert McArthur (1832-1903) on 6 December 1879 in Rapid City, MB.

Mrs. Mary Playford had 10 children in the family. The eldest Ellen died at the age of eight years old before he was born. Sarah Ann Playford married John Angus Fisher from Nova Scotia, and they lived in Manitoba. Stephen Playford married Mary Ann Stafford, and together they raised three children in Ontario before moving to Dauphin Manitoba. Ellen Playford, married twice, to George Ellis and John Hassard. Ellen and George had one son Thomas Ellis Playford and together John Hassard and Ellen had six children, naming the youngest, Chauncey John Hassard, after his uncle, the previous mayor of Biggar. Her other children were Catherine Lillian, Mary Beulah, Robert Pelham, Sarah, and Marion Ruth. Even though it was Chauncey John as the namesake, it was Robert Pelham Hassard who followed in his Uncle Chauncey K. Playford's footsteps becoming the mayor of Biggar from 1930 to 1933. Ellen Hassard died September 20, 1931 in Biggar. Mary Elizabeth Playford, who married James Hassard. Their marriage lasted three years before her untimely passing at the age of 34. Dina Playford married in a unique place called "Little Saskatchewan, North West Territories" to Reuben J. Smith. Not a lot is known about Emily Playford who was born in 1860. Thomas Frederick Playford married Mary Wishart and had one son, Robert Playford, he then married Mary Padfield and had one daughter, Sarah Ellen Playford. James Edward Playford married Ellen Mustard. Living till age 70, James Edward is interred in the family cemetery at Dauphin , Manitoba. Martin Playford passed away at the age of 51 in Dauphin , Manitoba. Martin had married Ann Rose McDonald in 1884.

n the records of Colin Carmichael, Mary McArthur, passed away March 1, 1925 in Biggar, but is interred at the Riverside cemetery in Dauphin, Manitoba.

The obituary for Mary McArthur from the Winnipeg Free Press Friday 6 March 1925:
"Mrs. Mary McArthur, formerly Mrs. Thomas Playford, was laid to rest Wednesday in the Riverside cemetery, Dauphin. Deceased was born in Yorkshire, England, in August, 1825, and at the age of nine years settled in Peterboro county, Ontario with her parents. She was married at the age of 15 years to Thomas Playford and moved to Manitoba with her family in 1878, and shortly after their arrival Mr. Playford died. In 1881 Mrs. Playford was married to Robert McArthur and in 1894 the family settled in the Dauphin district. She is survived by one daughter and three sons, Mrs. James Hassard and Thomas Playford, of Dauphin; James Playford, of Winnipeg; and Chauncey Playford, of Biggar, Sask., at whose home she passed away after living within a few months of the century mark. She leaves numerous grandchildren. Rev. Thomas Neville, Methodist church, conducted the funeral service which was well attended."
