Leslie's Drug Store

In October of 1913, Thomas G. Dark opened The City Drug and Bookstore, which was in the Star General Store on Main Street and 2nd Ave.. Leo Kate ran the Star General Store. In October of 1916 P.A. Hainstock became the manager of The City Drug and Bookstore.
In 1918 The City Book and Drug Store becomes Dark's Drugstore, and also in 1918 J.A. Campbell becomes manager of Darks Drug Store. In September of 1919 Thomas Dark purchased a business in Edmonton, one of the largest optical business' in the west.
In January of 1922 the name of the drug store was changed to Dark and Campbell Ltd., and J.A. became a partner in the business. In June of 1922 a temporary store was on Main and Third while a new building was being constructed. In October of 1926 they opened in the new building. In November of 1927 the partnership of Dark and Campbell was dissolved and the store was changed to Dark Drug Company Ltd. In January 1928 the management and name changed to Ford Drug Store.
On July 1, 1948 Elmer Ford sold the building to Ivan Leslie, and the building became Leslies Drug Store Ltd.
Mr Leslie operated this business until his passing in 1970. At this time his daughter Doreen Wylie became proprietor of Leslies drug store. In July of 2008 the business will celebrate its 60 year anniversary.
Of historical note this building was used for the first Elks Club meetings, The upstairs was also the school unit office in the 1940's. On the lower floor dances were held during the Second World War. The Dances were very popular and were well attended. In the 1950's, Brown's Tailor Shop was on the main floor in the Rexall room. Dr. Wolsley a dentist and Dr Hooge, a doctor occupied the upstairs.
