Dr. George Edward Kingston was born August 20, 1939 in the town of Biggar, Saskatchewan. He attended the University of Alberta where he earned his Bachelors degree in education and physical education, Master of Arts degree, followed by a Doctorate in philosophy.His thesis published in 1977 was on The organisation and development of ice hockey during childhood in the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Sweden and Canada He has earned respect as a Canadian Interuniversity Sport, or Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) coach, National Hockey Leaue coach as well as an international hockey coach.

In 1964 Kingston, and his wife Wendy had their first son, Kev who went on to become a lawyer. Their daughter, Wendy, was born in 1965 and she became a software executive.


During the 1968-74, 1975-76, 1978-83, and 1984-88 seasons, Kingston was the ice hockey coach for the University of Calgary Dinos. He was named Canadian Interuniversity Sport CIS Coach of the Year for the 1973-74 and 1980-81 seasons. Additionally, Kingston was Canada West Coach of the Year in 1981 an 1986. Kingston was presented with the Father George Kehoe Memorial Coach of the year Award during the 1973-74 and 1980-81 seasons.

Kingston served with the Atlanta Thrashers, Calgary Flames, Florida Panthers and Minnesota North Stars as assistant coach, and was head coach of the San Jose Sharks.Internationally he has coached in the German, Swedish and Norwegian Ice Hockey Federation. Kingston coached the Canadian National Men's Hockey team at the Olympics, Spengler Cup and brought the team to a World Championship. The International Ice Hockey Federation "Learn to Play Program is based on a 1976 study conducted by George Kingston.

In 2009, Kingston was awarded the Gordon Juckes award by Hockey Alberta. Kingston was also Hockey Alberta's Centennial Award recipient.
