Bert attended St. Boniface College in Manitoba, and signed up to the Canadian Military in 1941 to serve briefly in World War II. He married Patricia Hoy and with her had two sons, Greg and Bert Jr and their daughter Cheryl. Then 33 years later, Bert followed in his parent's footsteps and opened Bert's Grocery in Terrace. He operated his grocery store for close to two decades, and during this time was elected to Terrace council and then elected as Reeve.
