Circa 1914
Corner of 2nd Avenue and Main Street
The Canadian Bank of Commerce built a remarkable building for the times in 1913. This building was credited to be the finest building in Biggar and any neighboring town. One quote from the paper stated that Biggar was fast assuming a Metropolitan appearance and the rest of the town would be encouraged to follow suit.
This building is practically a three story, with concrete basement and was fitted with very modern equipment for both comfort and convenience. The design and outside finish is rough plaster and brick which gives the building every appearance of solidity and permanence and with the main part of the interior of the first floor finished in dark red, with rose-wood settees, for a pleasing effect.
The managers suite had every convenience, comfort and rest with four bedrooms, bathroom and lavatories in connection. The upper story is to be fitted with gymnastic equipment, giving employees the benefits on indoor recreation. The entire building was equipped with water connections, fire hose and lighted by a Lister-Bruston electric lighting plant, which was one of the best systems on the market and supplied the building with 58 lights. The turning on of any four lights automatically started the engine.
The Bank of Commerce stayed in this building for 69 years when it decided to build a new larger facility which held its grand opening in October of 1981.
