Biggar is home to the Biggar Branch Saskatchewan Genealogical Society and its' members are actively involved in preserving and documenting our local heritage. The Biggar Branch SGS formed after Rae Chamberlain taught a genealogy course through the community college. The Branch received its charter from the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society on April 19th, 1985. Over the years their members have assembled an impressive collection of local resources which will assist researchers searching their Biggar roots in Biggar and around the world.'

The Biggar Branch SGS Resource Center is on the second floor of the Post Office. The center is equipped with reference books ranging from "how-to books" to genealogical directories, and microfiche and fiche readers. Society members have recorded and indexed cemeteries in the R.M.'s of Biggar and Glenside, and the cemeteries at Landis, Cando and Lett (Rosemount). They have these Special collections: part of IGI on fiche, FHL locality catalogue on fiche, Town of Biggar Census for 1912, 1915, 1920, 1924, 1929 and 1945; assortment of Canadian National Railway Seniority Lists; CNR Retirees 1946 - 1991; births, marriage and deaths from The Independent 1913 to 1950; Obituary Index The Independent newspaper 1984 to 2007; obituaries on file from The Independent 1991 to 2006; 2 collections of Biggar undertaker records indexed; 1911 Canadian Census Index for Village of Biggar; listing of resources available at Biggar Museum & Gallery, 1881 Canadian Census Index CD; International Research Directories; subject and place index to many of the genealogical periodicals in our branch library; maps, atlases, basic ‘how to" books and research papers for Saskatchewan, Canada, United States, United Kingdom, Europe and Scandinavia and much, much more.


The Resource Center Biggar Branch SGS is open on meeting nights and special occasions. The Biggar branch holds regular monthly meetings on the second Wednesday of each month (except July and August) at the resource center. Time is set aside for members to share their research experiences and discoveries and help each other in specialized areas of research. Visitors are welcome to attend.

The Biggar Branch has a number of indexes including a Biggar Cemetery Directory with Plot Maps for sale and these may be purchased in the gift shop of the Biggar Museum & Gallery.
