Baum grew up in Biggar playing hockey throughout his primary grade school years there. Baum attended high school in Rosetown where he played Bantam hockey and Swift Current to play Saskatchewan Midget Hockey League (SMHL) Swift Current Contacts .

I grew up there [Biggar, Saskatchewan] and played there until I was about 14 I think. I went to Rosetown to play Bantam and for Midget I went to Swift Current for one year when I was 15 and then I went to the WHL.said Dan Baum during his interview with Guy Fleming

At the age of 16 he was playing in the Western Hockey League (WHL) when he joined the Prince George Cougars. He played four seasons with the Cougars 1999-2003 and was named Western Hockey League Player of the Week in 2001. Baum was selected in round 7 as #215 by the Edmonton Oilers in 2001 NHL Entry Draft. However Baum was later amongst eight who were cut from the team by coach Craig MacTavish when the team was set at 37 players Baum served with three teams American Hockey League (AHL) with the Toronto Roadrunners, the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) with the Columbus Cottonmouths, and the Canada Loto-Cup during the 2003-2004 season after playing with the Prince George Cougars. He devoted himself to the AHL Edmonton Roadrunners for 2004-2005. Baum continued on with the ECHL playing for the Greenville Grrrowl and the Dayton Bombers, the Phoenix RoadRunners and the Florida Everglades. He followed his several seasons with the ECHL and played with the Ligue Nord-Américaine de Hockey (North American Hockey League LNAH) St. Hyacinthe Top Design team. Baum played the 2007-2008 season in the German 2nd Eishockey-Bundesliga league for the Heilbronn Falcons.

Recently 19 year-old Dan Baum from Biggar signed with the Edmonton Oilers. Dan has spent the last four years playing with the Prince George Cougars of the WHL (Western Hockey League) as an assistant captain. If Dan doesn’t make the Oilers lineup right away, he will play for the Oilers farm team, the Toronto Roadrunners. We know that Dan will find this different and more of a challenge but it will be the chance of a lifetime and a challenge that we’re sure he’s up to. - Mr. Hermannson Saskatchewan Athletes Bound for National Hockey League
